Working Elevator - Moving Platform Lift System
A downloadable asset pack
A working lift for first-person games in Unity 6.3: the car carries the player between floors as a moving platform, never a teleport, carrying CharacterController and Rigidbody players. Call buttons on each landing and a panel in the car; doors that open at each stop, hold while anyone stands in the doorway and shut before it moves; a floor indicator, lamps and sounds. A floor can need power or a keycard. Three lifts come with it, a passenger lift, a goods lift and a PSX one, with Night Lift, a complete first-person demo using all three lifts. Built-in and URP; no other package needed.
A lift, not a teleport
- The car really moves. It travels between floors and carries whatever stands in it: a CharacterController or Rigidbody. A custom controller must preserve the lift's displacement. Look out of a goods lift as the floor goes by.
- Doors as a lift's. The car's doors and the landing's open together at a stop, stay open for a while, and open again on anyone standing in the doorway.
- Served as a lift serves. Calls on the way are taken first; a call from the floor it stands at opens its doors.
- Floors gated. A floor can want power (a lever, a fuse box, a card reader) or a keycard carried; the lift says why it won't go. Without power, the whole lift is dead and dark.
- Indicators and lamps. The floor and an arrow over each landing's doors and in the car; call lamps lit while the car is coming.
- Saves. The car's height and its trip save with the game.
Set up in the Inspector
Place a car, a landing's doors on each floor with its title (B, G, 1, 2), and a call button by
each. Drag the landings into the car. The car's panel works by itself: a key named for a floor
sends the car there. Any model works the same way: a key is a part named *_key_2.
What's inside
- Six components: Elevator, Landing, ElevatorDoors, ElevatorButton, FloorIndicator and ElevatorLight.
- A passenger lift in a station's stainless and teal: a car with doors that part, a panel, a handrail, a lit ceiling and an indicator; landing doors, a call plate and a floor display.
- A goods lift: an open platform with yellow rails and an up and down box, a sliding mesh gate and a call station.
- A PSX lift, on PSX Puzzle Machinery's car, doors, call button and panel.
- Night Lift: a station's offices after the last train. Take the goods lift up to put the passenger lift's power on, ride it to the top for the keycard, and take the old lift down to the basement and out.
- The systems under it: interaction, items and inventory, doors, power, story beats and three save slots, from Escape Puzzle Kit.
- Sounds: the motor, the bell, the doors, the buttons. Each is a field on its component.
With Escape Puzzle Kit
The package has a second package inside, the lift built on Escape Puzzle Kit's own scripts. Import it into a project with the kit, and a lift runs on the kit's power and keycards.
Two looks
The low poly lifts match Escape Puzzle Kit's and Low Poly Subway's: their textures made in code, one atlas, real-world scale. The PSX lift is PS1-style, from our PSX Puzzle Machinery, whose models keep their own licence beside them.
PSX look: PSX Puzzle Machinery by heyheythere. Sounds: PSX Horror SFX by heyheythere.
The PSX models come from PSX Puzzle Machinery, and the sounds from PSX Horror SFX. For puzzles round the lift, see Escape Puzzle Kit and Puzzle Minigames.
Unity 6.3
A .unitypackage: the scripts in their own assembly (HeyHeyThere.WorkingElevator), the props as
prefabs with colliders and their clips, the package's shader for Built-in and URP, Night Lift, the
props gallery and the documentation. Tested by a playthrough of Night Lift, riding all three lifts,
on both pipelines.
