32 voices for the people in your game, and a dialogue box that types and talks. Every letter your characters say blips in their voice, the way it does in classic RPGs and cozy games: chiptune beeps, mumbling voices from deep to squeaky, tuned bells and marimbas, and robots, ghosts and monsters. The DialogueBox node types the line out, blips as it goes, holds on commas and stops, lifts a question at its end, and offers choices, in 8 pixel-art styles.

Try it first: click Run asset pack above: pick a voice and hear it speak, dress the box in each style, type your own line, or play a short scene with a choice in it.

What's inside

32 voices in four groups, each five syllables tuned to a pentatonic scale or shaped like vowels, so a voice says words rather than beeping one note:

Chip (8): square, pulse, triangle, saw, gameboy, arcade, bit, arp Talk (8): deep, gruff, calm, bright, child, tiny, nasal, whisper
Tone (8): marimba, bell, glass, pluck, kalimba, woodblock, music box, whistle Character (8): robot, ghost, monster, alien, fairy, typewriter, terminal, radio

DialogueBox, a Control you size and theme like any other:

  • Types BBCode lines letter by letter, blipping every one, two or three letters as the voice sets.
  • A letter always picks the same syllable and pitch, so a word sounds the same each time it's said.
  • Holds after commas and full stops; a question's last word rises.
  • [wait=0.5] and [speed=2] in a line pause it or change its pace; [wave] and [shake] and the rest of BBCode work as usual.
  • A speaker's name plate and portrait, with a talking frame that moves in time with the blips.
  • Choices, by mouse, keys or pad. play() runs a whole conversation and returns the choice.
  • Open, close, next, move and select sounds, and signals for each blip, line and choice.

8 styles, each a Godot Theme with its own panel, name plate, next arrow, choice highlight and pixel font: the blue window of a 16-bit RPG, ink on old paper, wood, a comic speech balloon, a green terminal, a cyan hologram, gold on velvet, and blood on black for horror.

BlipVoice resources for your own voices: drop in any five short sounds and set the pitch, spread and blip rate.

All 165 sounds are plain WAV files too, for any engine.
