The screens of found footage, ready to use. A camcorder's viewfinder blinking REC over a date stamp, a VCR's blue setup menu and its PLAY and PAUSE, a security camera's feed with its clock running, and a TV's channel and volume: four on-screen displays for analog horror and found-footage games, as Godot themes and HUD scenes you drop over your camera. Every piece is also a 9-slice PNG with its borders listed, for any other engine.

Try it first: click Run asset pack above: the demo walks a corridor through all four devices, with buttons to record, zoom, rewind, switch cameras and change channels, and shows a found-footage game's pause menu, tape select and play screen in each device's look.

What's inside

4 HUD scenes, each a few properties and calls from a working OSD:

  • Camcorder: REC (blinking) or STBY, SP and the battery (blinking when low), minutes of tape left, the time and date stamp running on from any date you set, the tape counter, a W-T zoom bar while zooming, the viewfinder's corner marks and centre cross.
  • VCR and TV OSD: PLAY, PAUSE, STOP, REW, FF, REC and EJECT with their icons, the channel, a titled segmented bar for volume or tracking, a message in the middle (NO SIGNAL, NO TAPE), the counter running with the tape, and the blue screen. Each part clears itself after a few seconds, as a VCR's did; PAUSE stays.
  • CCTV: the camera's name, REC, the date and time ticking, its location, and NO SIGNAL over TV snow when the feed is lost.

4 themes: camcorder (white and yellow), VCR (white on blue, inverse menu lines), CCTV (grey) and TV (green). Each is a Godot Theme covering buttons, menu lines with a pointer, option buttons, checkboxes and radio buttons, segmented sliders and progress bars, text fields, panels, menu windows with a title band, tabs, tooltips, popup menus, scroll bars and a divider, all with the one-pixel drop shadow of on-screen display text, so your setup menu can look like the VCR's.

The game's pieces, in every theme: tape and save slots with label, date and counter, item slots with a picked one and stack counts, key caps for PRESS [E] prompts and key bindings, toggle switches, steppers (< SP >), toasts (TAPE FOUND, BATTERY LOW), a portrait frame in the viewfinder's corner marks and nameplates for subtitles: for pause and settings menus, tape select, inventories, hotbars and notes.

42 OSD icons at 16x16, white so a theme tints them: transport (play, pause, stop, rec, rewind, fast forward, skip, slow, eject), four battery levels, mains plug, tape, mic, volume, mute, headphones, light, night mode, zoom, focus, timer, clock, lock, warning, signal, TV, camera, CCTV, menu, the corner mark, a crosshair, and a key, note, photo, flashlight and gear.

Tape, a fixed-width pixel font cut like a VCR's character generator, every character 8 pixels wide, at 1x and 2x as BMFonts that Godot reads directly.

TV snow: a shader for static with a rolling band, and an 8-frame sheet of it for other engines.

  • Made at 1x for a 240p picture; scale it up by whole numbers and it stays crisp.
  • Demo project: the corridor through camcorder, VCR, CCTV and TV, with the tape look on the footage, and the game's screens in each look: pause with settings (switches, steppers) and controls on key caps, the tape select, and play (toasts, a pickup prompt, a note, subtitles, a hotbar).

Made for

  • Retro Screen FX: its VHS filter over your whole game, under this OSD.
  • Analog Horror SFX: a VHS tape going in, tape hiss and tracking noise, and TV static for these screens.
  • PSX Look, the PS1 shader for Godot 4.

Compatibility

  • Godot 4.3 to 4.7, tested on both ends.
  • Forward+, Mobile and Compatibility renderers.
  • The themes are plain resources; the HUDs are small scripts with no dependencies.
  • Any other engine: plain PNGs, with the 9-slice borders in the README and in slices.json.

Install

Copy addons/vhs_ui/, set Default Texture Filter to Nearest, and instance hud/camcorder_hud.tscn (or osd.tscn, cctv_hud.tscn) over your camera. addons/vhs_ui/README.md has the details.

Want to try it first? VHS UI Free has the camcorder viewfinder and its theme's controls, 11 icons, the font and the snow.
