26 PS1-style skies for any retro 3D game: night (clear, moonlit, cloudy, a city's glow), dusk, sunset, day, overcast, storm with lightning, fog, and space with a nebula, a ringed planet and a galaxy. Each is 32 colours, ordered-dithered like the PS1's textures and low-res on purpose, as a seamless panorama and a cubemap, with ready sky materials and environments for Godot and skybox materials for Unity.

Try it first: click Run asset pack above and stand under them in your browser: left / right for the sky, up / down for the category, drag to look round, P for the PS1 shader. Or take four of them into your project first: PSX Skyboxes Free, free under CC BY.

The PSX Bundle: from 8 to 31 October, all our PSX packs are in one bundle for less than a third of their price.

What's inside

  • Night (4): clear with the Milky Way, a full moon, a moon through broken cloud, a town's orange glow under low cloud.
  • Dusk (3): clear, with clouds lit from below, violet with a crescent moon.
  • Sunset (3): clear, with clouds, blood red.
  • Day (2): clear, with clouds.
  • Overcast (3): grey, dark, bright.
  • Storm (3): a storm, one lit by a lightning bolt, a sickly green one.
  • Fog (4): grey, night, sickly, red.
  • Space (4): stars, a nebula, a ringed planet, a spiral galaxy.
  • Every sky as a panorama (1024 x 512, and 512 x 256) and a cubemap (256 px faces, and 128), generated as a function of direction so neither has a seam and both are the same sky. 32 colours each, the stars, moon and sun kept crisp.

More skies

PSX Skyboxes II has the 27 this one lacks: sunrise and sunset, auroras, eclipses, hell, alien, smoke, underwater and snow. Same look and same palette size, and the two addons sit side by side.

Godot 4.3 to 4.7

An addon with, for each sky, an Environment (the sky, ambient light and reflections from it, and fog of its horizon's colour): put it on a WorldEnvironment and you're done. The skies alone are materials too: a PanoramaSkyMaterial on each panorama, and a cubemap one whose pixels stay square overhead. The viewer shows them over a plain with houses, poles and pines on the horizon. Tested on Godot 4.3 and 4.7, on Forward+, Mobile and Compatibility.

The full PS1 look

The captures on this page are the skies through PSX Look, our PS1 shaders for Godot 4: wobbling vertices, warping textures, 240p, dither and 15-bit colour, over your level in one line. PSX Look has a free sampler too.

Made to match

Put them over the rooftops of PSX Apartment Kit or outside the windows of PSX Hospital Kit, and texture the rest with PSX Textures.

Unity 6.3

A .unitypackage with every sky imported for the PS1 look (point filter, no mipmaps or compression) and a Skybox/Panoramic and a Skybox/6 Sided material each: Unity's own skybox shaders, on the Built-in pipeline and URP alike. Not HDRP.

Any engine

The panoramas (equirectangular, the middle column ahead) and the cube faces in OpenGL's order and orientation, as three.js, Godot and most engines take them. Set point filtering and turn mipmaps off.

License

Use in unlimited commercial and non-commercial games, apps and videos. No attribution required. Don't resell or redistribute the skies themselves.

Made with AI assistance (code and text; the skies are generated by code), checked by eye and tested in Godot 4.3 and 4.7 and Unity 6.3.
